  17. <p>     "I'm happy for everyone who reads this book that they can
  18. now meet the Darryl Strawberry I know--the real Darryl." Thus
  19. says New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden in the foreword to
  20. Darryl, ex-teammate Strawberry's new book. Gooden might have
  21. been less happy if he had read page 214, where the real Darryl
  22. suggests, "If Gooden was using cocaine during the 1986 World
  23. Series, I wouldn't have been surprised"--a line typical of
  24. Straw's fiery account of his eight-year battle with Mets
  25. management. The L.A. Dodger also says of his former bosses, "The
  26. Mets put black ballplayers in a second-class role and paid them
  27. second-class salaries." While insisting that his speculation
  28. about Gooden was "blown out of proportion," Strawberry
  29. proclaims, "I stand firm" on the charge of major-league racism.
